419 Scam – The "new partner from Paraguay" scam
The criminals send an email to victim, a total stranger, promising a check in reward for unspecified help in some former business. In the majority of the scam emails the sender tells you contact his "secretary" in Benin, but Nigeria and other countries also show up. In the most common version of email it mentions the businessman is with a new partner in Paraguay, but other countries are substituted too. Usually the amount of the check is $800,000, but it can vary. If the victim then contacts the "secretary" as instructed, he/she will be told that the check is ready but the boss who signed it didn't leave cash for mailing it by courier, which the victims is to wire by Western Union (WU) or Moneygram (MG). It will not be mailed without payment. Wire transfers by WU/MG are untraceable. You'll never get the promised payment while the real money you wired to Benin or Nigeria is lost to the criminals, who remain anonymous.
