419 Scam – The sweetheart scam

Recently we have come across a new twist on classic advance fee fraud. Instead of a directly contacting individuals to seek their assistance for a "BUSINESS PROPOSAL" that involves an inheritance, a government contract etc. that would yield a million dollar windfall to the person approached by the scammer, this scam starts off by a young female looking for a friend or pen pal. Later she will mention that her father died leaving millions of dollars deposited with a securities company and will provide contact details for a "lawyer" who will handle the inheritance. Inevitably this "lawyer" or the "bank" or "securities company" will ask the victim to send thousands of dollars in advance fees. The examples we have received were all sent from West African countries such as Senegal, Mali, Cöte d'Ivoire or Benin.

"almenda nathalie"
This French-speaking girl (?) claims to be a French citizen living in Canada who is looking for a friend for correspondence. The source of the spam is a provider in Benin, a former French colony that borders NIgeria and that is the source of many advance fee scams:
